    WHAT JESUS DIDN’T SAY

This Lenten Season we are considering the words of Jesus from the cross. These

seven statements of our Lord are packed with meaning. It is also significant what

Jesus does not say while He was being crucified.

He did not curse His enemies. He could have. They deserved it. Instead Jesus blesses them and forgives!

Jesus did not say, “I give up”.  From a human perspective it would seem logical. He had been through a lot and received no support. His friends forsook Him and the Heavenly Father seemed to turn His back on Him. Jesus could have surrendered to despair. Instead He persevered to the end.

Jesus could have said, “Give me drugs”.  It was a common practice to give a sedative to a dying criminal to ease their suffering. Jesus was offered that option. He refused. (Matthew 27:34)  As a result Jesus bore the full weight of our sin without His senses being dulled.

Jesus could have said, “It’s over.” His life was being snuffed out. His gift of love had been rejected by the world. He had given all that He had to give and now He was being ridiculed. Instead of saying, “It’s over.” Jesus said, “It is finished!”  He had completed the work He had come to accomplish and the results would be ongoing to the end of time. Salvation for the human race had just begun.

At the cross we hear what Jesus did say and we take these words of His to heart.

We are also very grateful for what Jesus did not say.

May you have a very blessed Lenten Season!      Pastor James Walburg
